(How we learn is more important than what we learn)」 と考えている大きな理由の一つです。
Supporting Your Child Before the Futaba GC Entrance Examination
With the Fukuoka Futaba Elementary School GC test approaching we would like to share some simple things parents can do at home, as well as some things we recommend avoiding during the final weeks before the examination.
We have been preparing students for the GC entrance examination for many years, and we are very proud of the results our students have achieved. To date, every Kensington Advanced Kindergarten student who has taken the examination has passed.
What we are most proud of, however, is preparing our children for life in elementary school. Our goal is not simply for a child to pass a test. Our goal is for them to enter a class that is right for them and to thoroughly enjoy this wonderful stage of their lives.
Prioritise their well being.
Preparing your child for any examination can be a stressful experience, both for parents and for the child. This is particularly important to remember when it comes to elementary school entrance examinations, where we are dealing with very young children.
No test is more important than our children’s wellbeing. Even though the test is getting closer, we should maintain good sleep, play, normal routines and normal family life.
It is also important to consider what signals our own words and behaviour are sending them. Young children are very sensitive to the emotions of the adults around them. If we appear stressed, worried or unhappy, they are likely to realise very quickly that a big and stressful event is approaching.
Try to keep things as normal and positive as possible. An entrance examination should never become the centre of a young child's life.
Make English fun
Any English you can do at home is valuable. However, we recommend focusing on activities your child genuinely enjoys and turning practice into play.
Joy is an essential part of our classes at Kensington for children of all ages and levels. Children learn better when they are engaged, curious and enjoying what they are doing.
Read English books together, play games in English, sing songs, talk about things your child is interested in. This shouldn’t feel to the child like preparation for an examination.
Don't worry about mistakes
If we correct every grammar or pronunciation mistake our children make, they will start thinking about avoiding mistakes rather than communicating.
More importantly, as parents and educators, we should think about how we want our children to grow up. Do we want them to be afraid or embarrassed about making mistakes? Or do we want them to take risks, try new things and not be discouraged by failure?
Do we want them to always choose the easy option because there is less chance of getting something wrong? Or do we want them to have the confidence to challenge themselves with something difficult, knowing that they might not succeed the first time?
Making mistakes, failing and losing are all part of life. We will all experience them. What matters is how we learn to respond to those moments.
This is one of the key reasons why, at Kensington, we believe that "How we learn is more important than what we learn." We look at our children and their development holistically.
Learning English is important, but learning to be resilient is even more important. We want our children to understand that making mistakes and not knowing something are a natural part of learning.
The above are not just simply tips for preparing for an examination. They are fundamental principles that guide how we teach and support children at Kensington, as well as how we believe learning should be approached at home. While we have discussed them in the context of the GC test, we believe they are important throughout a child’s education.
Remember that your child's healthy development, emotional wellbeing and happiness are far more important than the result of any test. The goal is not simply for your child to pass an examination in November, but for them to enter an elementary school environment that is right for them, to be happy there, to form positive relationships with their peers, and to enjoy this wonderful stage of their life.
Good luck to all the children taking the Futaba GC test, as well as those preparing for other elementary school entrance examinations this autumn.
And most importantly, enjoy this special time with your children and have a wonderful autumn!
